When London Fashion Week — or any fashion week, really — comes around, I usually find myself hiding away. It’s not that I don’t enjoy the buzz and excitement of these events; I just don’t like the noise and stress that come along with it. However, there are times when an opportunity comes up that I can’t pass on, like this season when I got the chance to go backstage at Mark Fast, thanks to TIGI.
Mark Fast is an incredibly talented knitwear designer known for his creative and humorous shows. I couldn’t say no to this invite, which gave me all-access passes and one-on-one time with both Mark Fast and Nick Irwin, the global director for TIGI Creatives. Nick’s Salt ‘n Pepa-inspired wigs were a key feature of the show, taking the hair game to a new level.
All the models wore the same graphically cut afro wig, which gave the show a stunning uniformity. Nick used lots of TIGI dry shampoo to dull the synthetic shine of the inexpensive wigs and added plenty of hairspray for hold and texture. It was surprising how these wigs transformed the girls’ appearances; I didn’t even recognize Daisy Lowe until someone pointed her out!
I managed to steal a moment to chat with Mark Fast about this season’s inspiration. He mentioned that he always starts his designs with music, channeling its energy; this time, it was the likes of Lil Kim, Jay Z, and Salt ‘n Pepa. The models needed to have strong features and the right attitude to pull off such a bold look.
In my video, you’ll catch glimpses of the stunning Christian Louboutins and Triumph’s body makeup lingerie. Look out for Daisy Lowe with a wig stocking, smoking in what seemed like a wild all-in-one! Pixie Lott and Kelly Brook also make appearances in the show highlights.
