Using cream eyeshadow with your fingers feels incredibly satisfying, perhaps because it’s reminiscent of the playful experimentation of childhood. The small pots of color and the carefree way you dip a finger in to swipe it over your eyelid make the process feel easy and relaxed. Even though it requires similar effort to applying powder shadow with a brush, it seems simpler because there’s just one shade to work with. To me, cream eyeshadow is straightforward and unintimidating.
Recently, I’ve been impressed by the cream shadows from Trinny London’s Mother Earth collection. There are four shades, with two having a distinctly terracotta tone. They all feature the brand’s long-lasting Eye2Eye formula, which is easy to apply but not so easy to remove. While there are other cream shadows that last longer and might need waterproof remover, I appreciate Trinny’s sheer formula for its foolproof nature—you could apply it without even looking, and it would still look good.
I was drawn to this collection after watching a video by Zoe Taylor on Instagram. Zoe, who uses Chanel products, created a stunning look with terracotta eyeshadow that inspired me to try those tones myself. Although I can’t replicate the look as perfectly, it’s the thought that inspires me. I use Truth, a reddish-brown shade without shimmer, as a base, topped with Fortitude, a bold metallic burgundy that makes quite a statement.
The other shades in the collection include Courage, a metallic pinky copper, and Hope, a goldeny peach that’s versatile enough to be used as a base or to brighten the lids. Hope is especially refreshing, making it a livelier choice compared to a plain golden beige.
For everyday wear, I find myself gravitating towards the straightforward Truth shade. It contains a hefty dose of red, but it’s still incredibly flattering, especially on sun-kissed skin from summer. These shades are perfect for late summer and autumn, offering warmth and a touch of sparkle to carry the sunny season’s vibe forward. This is especially comforting after spending much of the summer in various lockdowns.
