This week, I’ve been busy with some styling tasks. Topshop challenged me to create a maternity mini-shoot for an advertorial, picking out different outfits for various occasions. It was a fun challenge, given the recent lull in fashion. With a body undergoing constant changes, clothes shopping hasn’t been easy. My go-to casual style lately has been leggings and jeans, paired with oversized t-shirts and stretchy knitwear that fit over my growing bump.
The idea of styling “maternity clothes for every occasion” was right up my alley. While I’m not hitting the clubs or dressing for a weekend getaway in St. Tropez, there are still some distinctions to make. Let’s dive in:
Smart for Work:
Dressing for work while pregnant can be tough, especially finding that balance between casual and trying too hard. This dress perfectly achieves that, with its smart fabric and body-con side panels. To tone down the snug fit, I added a long cardigan over it. The Geometric Bodycon Dress is priced at £30, and the Salt and Pepper Cardigan is also £30.
Slouchy for Home: Part 1:
I spend considerable time at home working on my computer and want to be comfy. Topshop Maternity Luxe Charcoal Joggers are incredibly soft with a sporty look, paired with a simple black t-shirt. The joggers are £28, and the t-shirt is £14.
Slouchy for Home: Part 2:
Even at home, having outfit options is nice. This look is a bit more structured. The ponte leggings are thick and firm, resembling trousers more than leggings, so adding a leather jacket and boots makes it suitable for stepping out. It’s a “smart slouchy” style. I’ve received compliments on my Salt and Pepper Jumper (£36), and the leggings (£20) are great for post-baby wear or early pregnancy when tight waistbands aren’t comfortable.
Familiar for Everyday:
My everyday uniform used to be jeans, a vest top, and a plaid or checked shirt, which feels most like me. Here’s my favorite outfit, perfect for town visits, lunches, or weekend activities. One option is the Soft Checked Shirt (£38) with dark grey super-skinny Leigh Jeans (£38) and a grey ribbed vest (£6). A second version includes dark-vintage Leigh Jeans, a peach vest (£8), and an Oversized Chambray Shirt (currently unavailable online).
Dressy for Evening:
This little black dress works for both evening and daytime with flats. Dresses with full skirts can accentuate a pregnant belly, but I like the cute, feminine silhouette it creates. The lace panel on the shoulders is a nice touch. This dress is priced at £28.
Something Different:
I experimented with a top color I wouldn’t usually choose, just for a change. Though I’m not entirely convinced it suits me, what do you think? It’s the Maternity U-Neck Top (£18), paired with black jeans (Leigh, my favorite fit), though it would also look good with something grey.
