If you caught my latest vlog, you’ll know I’ve been on the lookout for a chunky cardigan that can double as a coat. There’s a specific name for this type of garment that I find a bit silly: coatigan. It conjures up odd images for me, including recalling a childhood song about a man named Michael Finnegan.
Anyway, I practically live in these coatigans because they serve multiple purposes. I use them as a lightweight robe for morning routines, layer them over leisure wear when working from home, and wear them beneath a parka for extra warmth in colder weather. They’re essentially my all-around go-to piece of clothing.
What I want now is a coatigan that’s incredibly bold and eye-catching. Forget about the usual understated colors like wheat or dove grey; I’m craving something with wild patterns and vibrant hues—a show-stopper akin to a lively parade. I’m dreaming of an Amazing Technicolour Dream Coatigan.
These eye-catching coatigans come with a hefty price tag, as I’ve discovered through weeks of research. If anyone finds a high-quality version at a more reasonable price, please share the link in the comments.
From left to right in the selection above, there’s the Zebra coatigan from Maxmara at Net-a-Porter, a vibrant cardigan from Paper, and a bright-trimmed coatigan from Pinko, which might be my favorite. I know the cardigan from Paper isn’t exactly a coatigan, but it’s charming and more affordable.
Also featured, we have designs from Hayley Menzies, known for her unique and eclectic knitwear. Her pieces are beautifully bohemian, and you’re unlikely to see anyone else wearing the same design. For something more subtle yet stylish, there’s a belted piece from Vince and a dogtooth checked coatigan from Reiss that looks quite fashionable when styled with a belt. However, the whimsical nature of Hayley Menzies’ designs keeps drawing me in.
