I’ve been having some fun dreaming up shopping ideas inspired by Beverly Goldberg, my favorite TV character. Have you seen The Goldbergs yet? It’s such a great show—I try to watch it every morning on E4 for a good mood boost. It’s loosely based on the real-life stories of a family called The Goldbergs, and it features Wendi McLendon-Covey as Beverly, the outrageous and meddling super-mom, and Jeff Garlin, who plays the clumsy, TV-loving dad. If you grew up in the eighties, it’s a nostalgic treat, and the honest stories often bring tears to my eyes by the end of each episode.
One of the standout features of the show is Beverly’s wardrobe, particularly her over-the-top knitwear that was so popular in the eighties. Think bejeweled, shoulder-padded, wild patterns—or sometimes all three together. She’s truly remarkable. I might look silly in that kind of fashion right now with my current body shape, but I want to enjoy it through you. So, I’ve picked some fabulous sweaters that I think Beverly would love. They’re a bit more polished and modernized than her original picks (without the shoulder pads), but they still make a bold statement! Pair them with tight, stonewashed jeans and a pair of white or red pointed-toe heels for the ultimate eighties vibe.
Let’s begin with a piece from H&M. It goes for £49.99 and looks great with high-waisted jeans unless you fancy showing off your belly button. Next, there’s a Coach sweater that Kate Moss was spotted wearing. With its oversized print and bright colors, it instantly grabbed my attention. It’s priced at £395 online.
I’m obsessed with a pink animal-print sweater that I adore and might buy for my post-pregnancy body next winter! It’s available for £46 at Topshop. Then there’s a striking jumper from Paper London, featuring a tiger print and a Beverly-esque ruffle. If you haven’t yet explored Paper’s excellent, inventive designs, you should check them out.
Beverly is a fan of batwing tops, and I’m sure she’d love this sequined version. It costs £60 at Topshop—wear it with black velvet ski-pants, just for fun. Remember those stirrup pants? I loved them!
Lastly, there’s an eye-popping piece from Boutique Moschino. It’s by far the most Beverly, but also the priciest and possibly the most challenging to wear. It’s so brilliantly bright, you might need sunglasses!
On a side note, the fantastic knitwear company Where’s Me Jumper can custom-knit anything you like. So, if you see a Beverly Goldberg piece and think you can rock that rhinestoned pink mohair sweater with lilac thunderbolts, they’re the ones to contact.
