From the start, I was never a fan of wearing leggings as everyday outerwear. But since it seems to be the norm now, I figured I’d give it a try. I’m still baffled why anyone would want to show off their lycra-clad lower half in regular daily activities. Yet, it’s a common sight—people pumping gas or shopping while wearing leggings as if they were regular pants.
It feels like a recurring nightmare: being out in public and realizing you’re practically naked from the waist down. In leggings, there’s no hiding anything—they cling to every curve, and the seams often slide uncomfortably into places they shouldn’t. To me, wearing leggings without covering up with a tunic or long t-shirt feels like showing up in an ill-fitting swimsuit.
The question is, why are we so keen on showcasing our bodies in such detail? I decided to brave the public in just my workout leggings to see if their comfort could win me over, despite feeling half-dressed. Admittedly, I’m biased. Even in the gym, leggings make me self-conscious. A simple yoga pose could reveal far too much—and not just to me but to anyone in the vicinity. These thin fabrics highlight contours instead of hiding them, and I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that kind of exposure.
There’s a certain understanding when you’re in exercise settings—you expect to see a bit more skin. It’s like going to the beach; everyone knows what to expect. But outside of these places, wearing leggings like regular pants puzzles me.
So, when I ventured out in leggings, how did it go? Not well. I felt awkward just crossing the car park. The shiny black leggings made me feel like a giant tadpole, and the unnecessary faux zips only highlighted how impractical they were. Without any actual pockets, I felt unprepared and exposed.
In the end, my take is this: leggings are best left for the indoors or places where they’re expected. Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but I prefer not to see—or show—so much detail in casual settings. This trend might be acceptable for some, but for me, it’s a definite no. What do you think? Are leggings as pants a fashion do or don’t?
