They often say not to work with kids or animals, and it’s also tough to get anything done when the weather is hot and tempers flare. I was just trying to get a nice picture of myself in my new summer dress to boost my confidence a bit. My self-esteem was low, mainly because I was dealing with postpartum hair loss. Unfortunately, my efforts to capture a perfect shot were foiled multiple times.
I thought it would be charming to do a feature on beautiful, crisp white cotton outfits, fitting perfectly with the season. I envisioned myself posing against a rustic wall with roses subtly in the background, like someone who bakes lemon drizzle cakes and reads novels while relaxing in a hammock. But reality had other plans. It was 31 degrees outside, and while I adore sunny days, the heat created several issues. My makeup melted and looked blotchy, and after sitting in my new dress for too long, my body heat left it wrinkled.
Desperate to cover up the creases, I grabbed Angelica, who was nearby in a pretty little dress of her own. I thought we could snap a cute mother-daughter picture, similar to the ones on Instagram where everyone looks like they live by the beach and only eat avocado toast. That idea failed too. Angelica was unhappy from the start and only cooperated if Mr. AMR suggested she look for snails, which she enjoys. So, the few usable photos we ended up with were of Angelica checking my hair for snails.
Our poor neighbors had to hear Mr. AMR barking instructions like, “Search Mummy’s hair for snails! Can you find any snails?” I also felt for Mr. AMR. He’s a skilled photographer who usually takes pictures of celebrities but I often drag him into taking quick snaps of me, using basic equipment and no proper lighting. Despite the challenges, he agrees to help, which always seems as out-of-place as asking a chef to microwave a meal in a fancy restaurant (with you all being the fine diners in that comparison).
I promised I wouldn’t share any photos, but here I am, rambling about the behind-the-scenes struggles. My head’s a bit foggy this week, making it tough to bring my beauty posts up to scratch. If you’re curious, my dress is the Camellia from Hush, priced at £69. Angelica’s outfit is from Little Bird at Mothercare, where I went a bit wild last week because their retro styles are fantastic. Her sunglasses are also from there, and they only cost about five pounds.
