I’ve become quite fixated on finding the ideal “spring” leather jacket. My growing baby bump makes other fashion choices a bit tricky, so I’ve been focusing on items like shoes, bags, and especially coats—pieces that I can throw on easily and know they’ll fit me both now and after the baby arrives, as long as I don’t mind not buttoning them up.
I actually own three black leather jackets, but I left them behind when I decided to renovate our holiday rental. I figured they wouldn’t fit by the time warmer weather rolled around. Turns out, most of my body hasn’t changed much, aside from a few extra pockets of fat here and there, which I like to think of as extra energy reserves for breastfeeding. I regret not bringing any of those jackets with me because nothing beats a leather jacket when the weather gets mildly warm in spring.
Since I didn’t have a black jacket on hand and wanted to avoid buying another one in the same color, I started exploring other options that would be well-suited for spring. Initially, I checked out nude and peachy-toned jackets, which were everywhere, but unfortunately, those tones tend to wash me out. Plus, I was worried they’d start looking dirty after just a few wears. There was a brown one I liked, but my partner pointed out that it was the same color as our old couch, which I used to call the “poo sofa.”
Eventually, I found a lovely grey jacket from Next. It’s made from buttery soft leather with a gorgeous shape and a soft, pale grey tone reminiscent of cashmere sweaters and fancy hotel rooms. It’s not the dull grey of airplane seats or a biker’s pants, but more of a “the sky is hinting at a spring shower” kind of grey. It’s cut to the waist at just the right length—thankfully not cropped, but also not overly long, which can make it look dated.
I’ve been throwing it over all kinds of bizarre maternity outfits, and it works perfectly with denim, dresses of any size, and everything else. It’s less stark than black but still maintains that cool, casual vibe. For me, it’s the perfect spring wardrobe staple for those transitional weeks when the chill is still in the air.
The Grey Leather Biker Jacket is priced at £160 at Next.
