Let’s chat about the BBC drama “Gold Digger” and a striking red lipstick. Odd combination, I know, but I was sidetracked while filming a makeup video. Throughout, I somehow veered into talking about Tom Hardy, morning breath, and some questionable storylines. Hang tight, we’ll tackle the lipstick first. After all, the holiday season is nearing, which means red lipstick talk is pretty much a must.
The lipstick in my video is Chanel’s new Rouge Allure in Rouge Spectaculaire, priced at £35. It’s luxurious with that satisfying clickety-click packaging I adore. Rouge Spectaculaire isn’t my usual pick—it’s got a hint of pink while I usually go for an orangey red. The pink, or blue, tones help make your teeth look whiter, unlike the yellowish shades that can appear like you’ve been smoking for decades.
This Chanel shade is a true red, perfect for some holiday mistletoe action (not that anyone actually does that). Speaking of unlikely kisses, “Gold Digger” had me baffled with a morning kiss scenario. Who wakes up fresh enough for such a moment? I can’t imagine how anyone wakes up ready to kiss without some serious morning breath buffering. It’s like opening an airplane door after a long flight—definitely not something you’d jump into!
“Gold Digger” really got under my skin with this concept. Both characters had been indulging in drinks the night before, yet no signs of mouthwash or teeth brushing action before that morning smooch. I get that we’re suspending disbelief, but I can’t roll with this one.
Aside from that, the show brought up another issue: the odd pairing between a character in her sixties and a much younger man, Benjamin. Despite age gaps being perfectly fine, nothing about Benjamin was endearing enough to explain the attraction for a savvy and sophisticated older woman like Julia Ormond’s character. It just didn’t add up.
This lack of connection persisted, prompting my partner to suggest skipping ahead. But I like the full journey, even when the ending is anticlimactic. Although I scored “Gold Digger” a 5/10, one point is for the stunning Devon manor house setting—so much swoon there!
While I found the series amusing, especially because of the dramatic lawyer son Patrick, the storyline just never quite hit the mark. On a side note, I recently snagged a silk shirt from Boden that feels very “Gucci-esque” with its stripes and floral design. It’s stylish and hangs well, although it was a bit snug. I’m usually a UK12, but should have sized up since it runs a little large.
That’s my take on “Gold Digger”. I’d love to hear your thoughts.
