It’s been a few years since I last invested in a quality coat, so I’m ready to take the plunge and find something nice that I’ll wear a lot and keep for the long haul. Last winter, I lived in my Marc Jacobs parka, but this season, I’m planning to put in a bit more effort. Even though it’s currently twenty-seven degrees outside (yes, Celsius!), and thinking about autumn coats seems premature, I’ve learned that the best ones sell out if I wait until mid-autumn. So, I’m being proactive and starting my search early! I think these coats are perfect for transitioning into winter—they’re not too heavy, yet warm enough for the colder months. Plus, they look stylish unbuttoned for a more casual vibe. The furry coat, for instance, has slightly shorter sleeves, which I think is a nice detail for autumn. The trench coat is great for rainy days, though probably not ideal for snow.
Here are five coats that have caught my eye during my extensive window-shopping while procrastinating on my essay:
1) Isabel Marant Knitted Coat: This coat is part cardigan, part coat, making it ideal for autumn when you don’t need full protection from the wind and rain. I love its simple and smart styling as shown on Net-a-Porter. It costs £310.
2) Faux Fur Coat by Karl Lagerfeld: Bear with me on this one—the photo doesn’t do it justice! I’ve been wanting a furry mid-length coat for years, something more glamorous than my usual leather jacket for evenings out but less formal than a long coat. It can be styled with anything from a dress to biker boots. It’s available for £390 and, yes, I ended up buying it!
3) Valentino Trench Coat: I adore a trench coat with a fitted, feminine cut, and this one is stunning! Unfortunately, only a small size is left on The Outnet, so it might not fit me well. If you’re a size 8, you’re in luck—it’s reduced from £850 to £357, making it a great investment since a trench coat can last forever.
4) The Patti Jacket from Whistles: Although this jacket looks heavier than it is, it’s actually quite manageable. I love its textured padding on the shoulders and sleeves, and the zippers at the wrist. This jacket offers a more structured look, but if you prefer the “authentic” biker style, it’s a great option. It’s priced at £295 from Whistles.
5) Dressing-Gown Style Wrap Coats: These coats are quite expensive (over £3,000), but I love their cut. Maxmara and Joseph often create this relaxed, unstructured style, which I’ve always admired but never enough to buy one. Though £3,000 is way out of my budget, I’ll keep an eye out for more affordable versions.
