Sometimes, I want something a bit more intense for my skincare routine. I usually go for gentle products, but during my pre-period week or when I’ve been overindulging in cheese or staying up late, my skin needs something quick and effective.
Enter exfoliating, resurfacing face masks. They might seem a bit old-fashioned now with their AHA technology, but they work wonders. They instantly brighten and smooth out your skin, almost like a mini vacuum for your face.
Exfoliating masks might seem old-school because AHAs have been popular for a while now, and the spotlight is often on retinol these days. While retinol products have transformed my skin, nothing beats the immediate gratification of a powerful exfoliating mask in the bath.
Though face masks seem to be less trendy now, with sheet masks taking the spotlight, I still enjoy a good mask session in the bath. It’s easier to rinse off, and it gives me something to do, preventing boredom after a few minutes in the tub.
With that said, here’s my quick rundown of the best exfoliating face masks right now. They’re all pretty potent, so avoid them if you have sensitive skin or plan to use retinol soon.
1. No7 Laboratories Resurfacing Skin Paste (£18 at Boots): This product gets extra points for its “paste” labeling. Packaged like an oil paint tube, it contains a mix of AHAs and PHAs, which are gentler. You might feel a tingle, but it’s suitable for slightly sensitive skin. Start with reduced application time and increase as needed.
2. Fruitizyme Five Minute Facial (£8.78 at Beauty Pie): This is a fantastic option. It combines glycolic acid with fruit enzymes for brightening and includes scrubby bits for manual exfoliation. It’s strong, so ease into it if needed.
3. Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Cleanser (£32 at SpaceNK): Although labeled a “daily foaming wash,” it’s much more than a cleanser. It combines cleansing and exfoliating in one step, offering quick results. Use it carefully for best results.
4. Pixi Peel & Polish (£26 from M&S): This combines lactic acid with other exfoliating elements, leaving your skin smooth and deeply cleansed. The tingle is mild.
If you’re choosing, here’s my advice: go for No7 if you’re just starting out or have sensitive skin, Kate Somerville for quick, intense results, Beauty Pie for a budget-friendly luxury option, and Pixi if you don’t get along with glycolic acid. These products are safe for pregnancy and breastfeeding, and generally suit all skin types except the very sensitive. Use them once or twice a week but avoid pairing them with other acid-based products or retinol to prevent irritation.
